This 400 ha farm has been successfully operating tunnels for a number of years. The climatic conditions are ideal with the moderating influence of the sea. This has resulted in excellent yields throughout the year. The owners have developed an extensive client base in the local coastal communities - Kenton-on-Sea, Port Alfred and Makhanda. All major supermarkets are listed and buy directly from the farm with deliveries done twice weekly. Tomatoes, cocktail tomatoes, green, yellow & red peppers and cucumbers are grown, picked, packaged and delivered from the farm under a branded lable. The farm is also well situated to supply both the East London and Port Elizabeth fresh produce markets with excess veg, being equidistant from both these markets.
A 24 KW alternative power system has
recently been installed with solar panels, inverter and batteries - with Eskom available to provide backup power. The farming enterprise runs solely on this system during the day, with no interruptions to the watering schedules due to loadshedding ensuring the profitability of the crops.
There are 3 fully registered boreholes; the 4th borehole, newly drilled, is presently not used but is available for further expansion. Several more drilling points have been divined and marked for future requirements.
The farm has two well-finished homesteads with distant sea views, with a further Settler guest cottage set in a lovely, fenced garden.
The property is ideally suited for cattle and game; the carrying capacity of the farm is 120 Large Stock Units (LSU) and the cattle handling facilities and loading ramp have recently been upgraded.
With the tunnels and markets already in place, a newly acquired C-Sealer automated cucumber wrapper with a 3000/hour capacity increases the cucumber production capacity and with a good supply of quality water, which has been registered with the Department of Water Affairs, as well as the cattle, this farm generates a great income with a secure future amidst the erratic supply of electricity.
