If location is everything, you need not look any further. This farm is exquisitely sited in the crook of an elbow formed by towering mountains with sheer, multi-hued cliffs. A river runs through it and the farm has seven kilometres of alluvial frontage.
For the dedicated farmer, 150 hectares of arable land, with the option to clear even more, and plenty of grazing are available. The area is dotted with springs gushing pure, clear water all year long. Registration of water rights for the river is in its final stages.
The arable soil is red ochre, which retains water well. Recent government studies have confirmed it as the best agricultural area.
The Old Sandstone Farm House was built in 1896. It has three en-suite bedrooms, a very spacious lounge/dining room, kitchen, pantry, storeroom
and laundry room. The wide, deep stoep offers breathtaking vistas over the spectacular landscape. The structure is sound and it is the restorer's dream.
On the homestead is a large sandstone barn which can be converted into a hall.
It is well-appointed to be a popular holiday farm and spectacular wedding venue. Seven chalets were built on the mountain slopes and though they got caught in a brush fire due to negligence by renters to maintain proper firebreaks, they should be straightforward to repair. The farm has obtained preliminary approval to build 75 additional units, a conference centre, chapel and a high-altitude sports training facility.
The river offers rafting and fishing. The bird-watcher will be treated to a number of species singular to the area. Bushman paintings and dinosaur fossils wait to be discovered.
As a commercial farm, it could also be for the adventurous. There are 4-X-4 trials, horse-riding, and hiking trails. A residential, or tourism farm, or a combination of all three. The owner is VAT-registered.
